Sick. Sick. Sick. Yes I spent the whole week just going to class from 8-5 and then sleeping 10 hours a night. Oh and soup. Lots of soup ;) How I’ve been sick here 3 times is beyond me…probably comes with traveling in such close quarters with the same people.
This weekend was fun though. On St. Patrick’s day I went out with 4 Aussie friends I made a few months ago. It was awesome seeing them again and I had a blast. We went pub crawling, went to some live music concerts, and ended up at a house party. The Guinness was probably not the best for my sickness, but it had to be done. They brought a ton of people along too so I met the whole Uni crowd. I love Aussies, and it was a more than necessary change from my usual Palo Alto bunch.
Saturday was spent sleeping in and then writing a 10 page paper—what fun! Though at night I met up with the same Aussie gang from the night before. Again, detrimental to my health but it was just so nice to hang out with cool people after so long. We started off at another chill house party with the beautiful view of the city lights. Wine, cheese, and heavy political discussions. What a way to start the night. Finally around 2 am we decided to hit up the “Valley” which has all the huge clubs in Brisbane. We went to 2 hip-hop clubs and then a Gay club as per requested by 2 of the guys. The Gay club was actually awesome!! No sketchy gross men hitting on us, and for the first time WE got to “save” our guy friends when need be. One crazy encounter though. I guess Australia has recently had huge drug problems, so as we were waiting for one of the clubs at like 5 am, we saw one woman getting the shit kicked out of her. I was almost in tears and one of my friends had to cover my ears so I didn’t hear all the breaking bones and yelling around me. The police didn’t do anything either, but apparently it happens all the time as a result of Coke and Ecstasy. I know its just a part of city life here, but really unimaginable. One had the urge to rush in there and stop them but knew they couldn’t, or they too would become vulnerable to the gang waiting behind. Soon after the sunrose I realized I was late to class (yes class on a Sunday…) and rushed out of the club at 7. I had an hour before class started. I changed out of the heels and hopped onto the bus for class. Painful experience really, not to mention I no longer have a voice and have been coughing like crazy all day. New goal for the week: Take care of myself.
No regrets from the awesome weekend though…I’m only in OZ once :) Plus I think me and the Aussie gang are going to a comedy club tomorrow night. I don’t really know if I’ll understand the Auzzie humor, but we’ll see. Somehow have to fit in finals studying time…Okay I don't think I'm making sense anymore in this delirious state...we'll call this my "stream-of-conscience" entry...Gnite peeps! |
